Il fiume di sera/e’ immobile e liscio...

Come nelle brevi quartine dei componimenti poetici cinesi, la pittura di Chester Stella segue regole che non ne condizionano la struttura ma si dispongono ad esaltarne le caratteristiche formali e semantiche.
Quattro versi caratterizzati dal ritmo di cinque sillabe ciascuno, dove ogni sillaba è un ideogramma semplice e perfetto, in sé concluso; come le pennellate dei suoi “Territori” che traggono dalla natura, semplificandoli, i segni dei cicli stagionali e i messaggi del tempo interiore.
La visione rapida ed intensa che attraversa lo sguardo riesce a fissarsi nei dipinti di Stella in pochi elementi essenziali. Essi traducono ciò che si vede in ciò che si sente. Gli intervalli tra un colore e l’altro, tra una visione e l’altra, tra un pensiero e l’altro sono fatti di silenzio, di bianco sospeso sopra le suggestioni non visibili.

Biographical Notes

Chester Stella, born in Thiene in 1950, has been engaged in art for forty years. During this time he has alternated his research between various areas: from ceramics to design, and from stage design to theatrical direction.
However it is in graphics and, especially, in painting that his activities as an artist have been concentrated. His experience in these fields has garnered countless official recognitions in Italy and abroad right from the early nineteen seventies. To enrich his work over these decades Stella has also exploited the experience gained from numerous trips and long stays abroad in contact with different cultures, probing the reasons behind them and their significance. His works, exhibited at public and private shows and applauded by critics internationally, can also be found permanently in the collections of many European and non-European countries.

The Evening River/Is Motionless And Smooth (Yang Ti)
As in the brief quatrains of Chinese poems, Chester Stella's painting follows rules which do not condition the structure but arrange themselves to exalt its formal and semantic characteristics:-
Four lines characterized by the rhythm of five syllables each, where each syllable is a simple and perfect ideogram, complete in

itself, just like the brushstrokes of his "Territories" which draw from nature, simplifying them, the signs of the seasonal cycles and the messages of interior time.
The rapid and intense vision which passes through each glance manages to fix itself in Stella's pictures in just a few essential elements: it is these that translate what you see into what you feel … the intervals between one colour and the next, between one vision and the next, between one thought and the next are composed of silence, of white suspended above invisible power.

Note Biografiche

Chester Stella, nato a Thiene nel 1950, si occupa di arte da quarant’anni alternando la sua ricerca in diversi ambiti: dalla ceramica al design, dalla scenografia alla regia teatrale.
E’ tuttavia nella grafica e soprattutto nella pittura che si concentra la sua attività di artista. Un’esperienza che raccoglie, a partire dall’inizio degli anni Settanta, numerosi riconoscimenti ufficiali in Italia e all’estero. Per approfondire il proprio lavoro Stella si è avvalso in questi anni anche delle esperienze derivate da numerosi viaggi e lunghi soggiorni all’estero a contatto con culture diverse, indagando di queste motivi e significati. Le sue opere, esposte in allestimenti pubblici e privati, riconosciute dalla critica internazionale, sono anche presenti permanentemente nelle collezioni di molti Paesi europei ed extra europei.
